On a site in the north western 'growth areas' on Sydney's fringe, the proposal is for a vertical childcare centre over 3 levels crowned, with a small medical consulting suite sitting atop. Designed to accommodate new roads that dissect the site to provide new infrastructure for the area, rapidly densifying from rural land to high-density communities, the building is tall but thin with generous balconies wrapping the perimeter on three sides to provide access to light and ventilation for the stacked childcare playgrounds.

Surrounded by new streets on three facades, the resulting envelope once these roads are constructed is a thin, tall, linear block that "broadsides" a new street connecting rural landscape to one side with a council reserve/park behind. This broad elevation, facing north-east, incorporates deep balconies, expressed circulation and a clear structural frame. The deep balconies are the principal playground areas for the childcare, providing outlook to the semi-rural landscapes beyond and facilitating light and air into the children's playground areas.

The playground spaces take advantage of double height spaces and a good aspect, creating a series of dynamic outdoor areas integrating a mix of synthetic and natural features despite their elevated nature. Connected directly to the classrooms, the childcare centre is a unique opportunity to introduce a much needed community service into what will be a dense urban area on the fringe of Sydney and it's semi-rural surrounds.
